Need a new warm up for gigs or practice sessions? I call this hand routine, ‘The Essentials’, as it covers the essential stickings and time signatures that are commonly used by contemporary, working drummers.
The routine uses the single and double stroke rudiments. Combinations of these two stickings make up nearly every drumming rudiment. It is important that as drummers we can not only play clean single and double strokes, but can also effortlessly move between them. If you close your eyes there should be little to no difference in the sound when transitioning between each sticking.
The routine incorporates 8th notes, 8th note triplets, 16th notes, triplet 16th notes and 32nd notes. These subdivisions are common in nearly every contemporary genre of music. Drummers who can best express themselves on the kit can play between these subdivisions without missing a beat. Listen to drummers such as Dave Weckl, Benny Greb and Andy Gander (to name a few) to hear this fluidity at its greatest level. Make sure to play the routine both up and down the page.
